3 Things to Do When Your Photography Business is Slow
Commercial photography tips by The Meadow Studios.
Review Your Portfolio:
It’s good to get several eyes on your portfolio because it could lack something necessary for future clients. For me (at least today lol), I can honestly give myself a review without taking it personal. Ask me tomorrow and I might feel attacked, but it’s coming from a good place. Plus it’s a good time to reach out to your fellow photographer friends and get their thoughts on it as well.
Say it with me, “development always takes time!” ANNND there’s no business that not affected by slow days. Its real out here for everyone.
Take Classes & Buy Resources:
Many classes are offered online and even in person depending on your area. Personally, studio lighting is an area I would like to evolve in. Taking the time to invest / educate yourself will always be a return on investment. Trust me. You can not skip this part!
So please don’t cheat yourself by comparing and coveting hoping you can be in “x” shoes. It will not save you! I’ve been there, but celebrating other photographers win’s and buying their resources will be beneficial to you in the long run. It took them a hot minute to get to where they are, and your journey may look different, but you will get there. Don’t give up! Persevere!
Practice, Practice & Practice:
This is self explanatory so I don’t have to go too deep.
I find inspiration through Pinterest a lot but I’m starting to look to nature and illustration for my commercial photography. If there’s a certain style I want to go for when I’m building my portfolio, I’ll draw it out first. It’s easier for me to arrange my props / products in production when sketched first.
I shoot products I’m genuinely attracted to and would personally eat or drink. This helps me to create something unique by using all of my 5 senses. And by asking the question, “how do I want this image to taste?” “How should I show texture in this image to represent touch?” “What do I want my audience to hear when interpreting this image?” And you get this rest.
Stay curious and bring creatives along the ride with you.
